There is something about photographing a family at home that always feels a little more honest. No rushing out the door, no trying to convince everyone to behave in a place they’ve never been before. Just your people, your space, and all the little routines and personalities that already exist there.

The Marin family’s session was exactly that. We let things unfold instead of trying to control every second of it — playing on the bed, chasing little moments of laughter, snuggling up, and giving everyone room to just be themselves. Some of my favorite photographs from the afternoon came from the moments that probably felt like nothing while they were happening.

That is what I love most about documentary family photography. It isn’t about creating a version of your family that only exists for the camera. It is about noticing what is already there: the way your baby reaches for you, the faces you make at each other, the chaos happening just outside the frame, and the tiny things you swear you’ll remember forever but somehow don’t.

We also filmed part of their session, which brought another layer to the story entirely. Photographs can freeze all of those little expressions and connections, while film gives you the movement, the laughter, and the sound of this exact season of life. Together, they become something that feels less like a family session and more like a little time capsule.
